It’s been a beautiful journey!

Dear subscriber family and friends,

It feels like just yesterday that I began this site, fueled by passion and dedication to sharing weekly curated stories about our North. Now, as we approach our sixth year, the time has come to sunset this project—a moment that feels fitting announced on Labor Day.

The site’s content will remain available for viewing through August 2026 and be accessible on our social media platforms.

With gratitude for your support and readership,

Gregg Tusler

About

Historical
Minnesota became the 32nd state of the Union on May 11th, 1858. A small extension of its northern boundary makes it the most “northerly” of the 48 contiguous states. This peculiar protrusion came from a boundary agreement with Great Britain before the land had been carefully surveyed. Minnesota is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario to the north, Lake Superior and Wisconsin to the east, Iowa to the south, and South Dakota and North Dakota to the west.

Contemporary
The idea of “North” as a cultural identity is a more recent story. In 2014, writer Tim Gihring published an article exploring how the term was being shaped, marketed, and adopted. His reflections—and a follow-up piece in 2018—sparked my own curiosity when I returned to my native Minnesota after living in New York City.

As “North” began appearing in taglines, campaigns, and conversations, I wondered: What does it truly mean? Where could someone go to find a clear expression of it?

That question led to the creation of doitinnorth.com. This site became a home for exploring and celebrating “North” by curating the unique history and crafted culture of Minnesota—its events and destinations, art and design, style and lifestyle, people and places, food and drink, shops and experiences. A place for insiders and out-of-towners alike to see what “North” really looks and feels like…
